What is the Minimum Turnover for FSSAI Registration in India?

In India, FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) registration is mandatory for all food businesses, regardless of their size and turnover. The primary goal of FSSAI is to ensure that all food products sold in India meet the highest safety and quality standards.

Unlike GST (Goods and Services Tax), FSSAI does not have a minimum turnover requirement for registration. All food businesses, including manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and even small-scale food businesses such as food carts and street food vendors, must register with FSSAI regardless of their annual turnover.

However, there are different types of FSSAI registration based on the size and nature of the food business. Here are the different types of FSSAI registration:

  1. Basic FSSAI Registration: This type of registration is for food businesses with an annual turnover of up to Rs. 12 lakhs. The registration is valid for 5 years and can be renewed thereafter.

  2. State FSSAI Registration: This type of registration is for food businesses with an annual turnover of more than Rs. 12 lakhs but less than Rs. 20 crores. The registration is valid for 5 years and can be renewed thereafter.

  3. Central FSSAI Registration: This type of registration is for food businesses with an annual turnover of more than Rs. 20 crores. The registration is valid for 5 years and can be renewed thereafter.

It is important to note that while FSSAI does not have a minimum turnover requirement for registration, food businesses with a higher turnover are required to register for higher categories of FSSAI registration. For instance, a food business with an annual turnover of more than Rs. 20 crores must register for central FSSAI registration, regardless of whether it meets the requirements for basic or state FSSAI registration.

In conclusion, FSSAI registration is mandatory for all food businesses operating in India, regardless of their size and turnover. While FSSAI does not have a minimum turnover requirement for registration, food businesses must register for different categories of FSSAI registration based on their annual turnover. It is important for food businesses to ensure that they are registered with the appropriate category of FSSAI registration to operate legally in India and ensure the safety and quality of their food products.
